About this event
The Foundation Practice Rating is a system that assesses foundation practices in relation to accountability, transparency and diversity. We are launching our first report on this new and exciting model. Funded by 10 foundations, we hope it encourages dialogue about improving practice in areas in which research suggests foundations often lag behind other sectors of the economy.
Foundations have been assessed on:
Accountability – how can anyone find out who undertakes the work and/or decision-making of a foundation? And how can they make their voice be heard?
Transparency – Does a potential grantee have access to the information that it needs to be able to contact the foundation, decide whether to apply for funding, or more generally in advance of any grant application?
Diversity – the extent to which a foundation reports on diversity of staff and trustees, and how well it caters for people who prefer/need to communicate in a particular way.
We have based the criteria on consultation with the wider philanthropic charitable sector about what matters to them in their interactions with foundations. It is also draws on existing standards and good practice sources
The launch will be the start of a conversation about the results of the assessment, philanthropy’s role in society, reflections on change and responses from the sector. Speakers will include:
- Caroline Fiennes and Dr. Sylvia McLain, Giving Evidence who led the research
- Fozia Irfan is the Director of Children In Need, a philanthropy consultant and founder of the DEI Coalition.
- Michael Edwards is a writer and activist dedicated to strengthening civil society.
Max Rutherford head of policy and practice at the Association of Charitable Foundations, the UK membership body supporting grant-making charities.
We see this as a fantastic opportunity to learn and reflect on current practices in the sector.
We endeavour to be as accessible as possible. If you have any needs please do let us know a week in advance of this launch event.
