Taking action to improve

foundation practices

We look forward to seeing you at the launch today. If you are joining us face to face we will see you at 1:30pm, at Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London, WC1R 4RL. If you are joining us virtually please use this link to Twitter: https://youtube.com/live/uIZE65rXZ5M?feature=share

The Foundation Practice Rating (FPR) Year 2 Report launch is taking place on Thursday 23 March 2023, 1:30pm-4pm, at Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London, WC1R 4RL, and is open to all charitable foundations and trusts and anyone with an interest in improving foundation practices. If you cannot make it in person, we will also be live streaming the event.

The Foundation Practice Rating is a system that assesses foundation practices in relation to accountability, transparency and diversity. We are launching our second report on this new and exciting model. Funded by 13 foundations, we hope it encourages dialogue about improving practices in areas in which research suggests foundations often lag behind other sectors of the economy.

At this free event we will launch the Year 2 report findings and have guest contributions from Carol Mack OBE (ACF), Ben Cairns (IVAR), Tania Cohen (360 Giving), and Caroline Fiennes and Dr Sylvia McLain (Giving Evidence) who led the research.

To find out more about the FPR please visit Foundation Practice Rating.

We endeavour to be as accessible as possible. If you have any needs, please do let us know a week in advance of the event.

If you have any questions, contact Admin on enquiries@friendsprovidentfoundation.org.uk

Carol Mack OBE, Chief Executive, Association of Charitable Foundations

Carol was appointed Chief Executive of ACF in 2016, having previously served as its Deputy Chief Executive. Prior to ACF, Carol worked advising charities on governance and charity law, as well as national policy formulation at the Charity Commission for England & Wales.  She also has experience in grass-roots charities and the commercial sector. She was previously a founding trustee of the National Emergencies Trust and Vice Chair of Tree Aid. Currently she is Chair of the Wales Funders Forum and a board member of Philea, the European Philanthropy Association.

Ben Cairns, Director, IVAR

Ben has 35 years’ experience of work in and around the UK voluntary sector – as volunteer, trustee, manager and researcher. Co-founder of IVAR, Ben led its establishment in 2000 as part of Aston Business School. Since then, Ben has supervised over 250 research and evaluation projects, ranging from small organisational reviews with grassroots social change groups and grant-making bodies, to national programmes of support and learning for leadership teams. He leads IVAR’s work to support the evaluation and learning practices of independent foundations, principally through the UK Evaluation Roundtable. And he is currently supervising IVAR’s three flagship programmes: Leading in Uncertainty, Connecting Health Communities, and Open and Trusting grant-making.

Tania Cohen, Chief Executive, 360Giving

360Giving is a charity that supports grantmaking in the UK to become more informed, effective and strategic.

360Giving helps funders to publish their grants data in an open, standardised way, and supports people to understand and use this data to improve charitable giving. This includes a search engine for grants that have been awarded, GrantNav, tools and training to support people to use the data, and analysis and insight to support collaboration between funders and to inform strategy development.

Now over 240 funders have published over £175bn in grants data, and over 30,000 people access and use this data each year to understand and improve charitable giving.
